Minutes of Spring Meeting                                       May 6, 1999

1.  The meeting was held at LaFinestra in Wakefield.  Hors-d'oeuvres were served.

2.  Roll call of teams  - Eighteen teams were represented.  The passing of Wayland advisor, Maxine Gordon, was sadly noted.

3.  Minutes of the fall meeting were unanimously approved as written.

4.      Dave Zuretti presented the Treasurer's report.  He reported a balance of

$6 824.55 as of 5/6/99.  After expenses from the spring meeting (including trophies and plaques), the anticipated balance for June 1, 1999 would be $5 700.  The report was approved unanimously.

5.     Test Writer, Vaag Mosca, reported that our test checkers continued to be very helpful this year.  Vaag also confirmed that this will be his last year as test writer, and that Kent Findel (Winchester advisor) has indicated an interest in taking a turn after next year.  It was also noted that Vaag is the Massachusetts coach for the MATHCOUNTS competition to be held in Washington,  D.C. on the weekend of May 14 - 16.    An increase in the Test checker stipends were voted from $200 (each) to $250.  This position did not get an increase last spring when others did.

6.     Webmaster, Vaag Mosca, stated that he plans to install the means to record the number of "hits" on the League website.  As a token recognition of the invaluable service he renders, the Webmaster stipend was raised to $500 (from $250).

7.     Tabulator, Bob Velevis, reported that most of the time he was receiving reports on the Saturday following the meets.  He stressed the importance of writing the names clearly, alphabetically, and last name first.  Use league forms only.

8.     The topics for 1999 - 2000 will remain the same.

9.     Nominations for officers were called for.  It was moved and unanimously approved to maintain the current slate.

10.            In an open discussion, the suggestion was made to make an effort to integrate the Intermediate League with the High School League.  Perhaps some of the upperclassmen could be recruited to assist middle school coaches.

11.            Cluster figurations were announced for 1999 - 2000.  Two new clusters were added (1) to make smaller clusters and (2) to make it more feasible for schools formerly in large clusters have a better chance of making it to the top.  Cluster names are Hypatia (early Egyptian woman mathematician, scientist, philosopher, author, and teacher) and Gardner (Martin, author of math puzzles and games to enliven the learning of math)

12.  Team and individual awards were presented.
