Minutes of Spring Meeting May 9, 2002
1. The meeting was held at Prince House in Saugus. Hors-d'oeuvres were ordered and served.
2. Roll call of teams - Seventeen teams were represented.
3. Minutes of the fall meeting were distributed and unanimously approved as written.
4. Dave Zuretti and Sue McLellan took over the treasurer’s job after the passing of Beth Morrissey. Both were thanked greatly.
5. Dave presented the Treasurer's report. He reported a balance of $4,613.52 as of 5/9/02. Income apx. = 9300, expenses apx. = 9300. 50 Teams participated. Expenses from the spring meeting (including trophies and plaques) will come out of the balance. The report was approved unanimously.
6. Dues will remain at $185.
7. Test Writer – Discussion on difficulty of questions. Although most understand the need to have some difficult questions to help distinguish top teams/students, the number of zeroes frustrated some schools. Suggestion: Add a less difficult question to each category to try to eliminate zeroes while keeping one challenging question per category. Advisors were happy with the clarity of the questions and the concise, clear explanations. Kent will select a new student to check his questions and answers this year.
8. Webmaster, Vaag Mosca, reported that there are now 792 pages on the web. We have received over 3000 visits to the site averaging more than 7 hits per day. Vaag has asked for any relevant links to post on the site.
9. Tabulator, Bob Velevis, reported that he was pleased with the advisor’s response. He asked all advisors to please print the names clearly and correctly. VP’s are asked to please mail score sheets and team sheets to Bob.
10. Proposal – A division may move a meet date either by up to 8 days before the scheduled date or up to 8 days following the scheduled date, but not more.
11. The topics for 2002 - 2003 will remain the same after much discussion on whether to put prime factorization in the first meet.
12. Nominations for officers were called for. It was moved and unanimously approved to maintain the President, Web Master, Test Writer, and Tabulator as is. Kelly Hagan from Wayland was nominated and accepted as the new Treasurer. (President’s note: Kelly’s new, married name as of August, 2002 is Kelly McCormack)
13. Cluster figurations were distributed and explained by Tony for 2002 - 2003.
14. Leslie Edelman – Newton, mentioned it was difficult and timely to compete with Mansfield and Foxboro. Tony discussed inviting other schools from that area to join and form a small new division. Vaag proposed creating a new position whose job is to send a written invitation to schools not currently involved and to follow up on the invitation. Recruiter position established @ $250. Sue McLellan nominated and elected.
15. Bob Ohlson proposed a letter be sent to principals once schedule has been set so that other school events are not scheduled on meet dates. Tony has agreed to sign a letter if it is forwarded to him.
16. Clarified: Top 10 in each grade will receive awards.
17. Many praised food and choice of location.
Respectfully submitted,
President
